Jonah wasn’t someone who was unfamiliar to the Word of God. His scripture references are numerous and on point. Still, he chose to disobey. His heart was not consistently in the right place. The mercy of God made him furious and that's weird.
We can never really have the compassion to reach the lost unless our hearts are saturated by the Word Himself ─Jesus (John 1:1). Our destructive patterns of dealing with emotions will get the best of us.
Instead of escaping, it is best to come to God. Jesus is full of unfailing love and faithfulness (John1:14). Jonah’s selfishness blinded him of that truth.
Not gonna lie, I was Jonah. I know Bible stuff as a child. However, I delayed obedience and I had anger issues. Growing up in a Christian environment does not equate to a changed heart. It would never mean one is ready to go out there and share Jesus.
God had to wrestle with my insolence. When I reached the depths of my brokenness, I asked for His forgiveness. I wanted Him to work in breaking my heart for whatever breaks His.
Eventually, the more I truly surrender my life to Christ, the more I see that there are a vast number of people who needs His truth. And perhaps, this is what God intends John, the writer of Revelation to do ─prophesy again (Revelation 10). For John to be able to do that, he had to eat the scroll ─to let the Word of God get into his innermost being.
Give Jesus a chance, He can change our hearts ─the very thing Jonah never asked God to do.
