MY FATHER IS A POLICEMAN: Abuse of Power, Christmas & Christianity

In broad daylight, surrounded with people, Jonel Nuezca killed a mother and child. A PVC pipe turned noisemaker aka "boga" caused the argument that led to a double murder. In the middle of the chaos, Nuezca's daughter exclaimed, "My father is a policeman" with much pride.

While some like Mommy Pinty hopes to give Nuezca's kid a slap, others on the internet kept asking others not to involve the child in the matters. I clearly stand that it's the dad who's at fault both for the murders and the shameless behavior of his daughter.

Background check on the suspect revealed previous criminal charges that were dismissed due to lack of substantial evidence. Armed and in position, Nuezca felt invincible. He is after all a Senior Master Sergeant. It was all arrogance until a video of him shooting the victims appeared on Facebook.

What the trending video showed was nothing less than abuse of power.

Abuse of power is a norm in Nuezca's household. This is evident to the point that a young child can be proud of her father's hasty unregulated actions just because he is a policeman.

Though this news is disturbing, it isn't a new phenomenon.

Prophet Micah spoke against people like Nuezca in the Old Testament.

"What sorrow awaits you who lie awake at night,

thinking up evil plans.

You rise at dawn and hurry to carry them out,

simply because you have the power to do so."

-Micah 2:1

Influence and power are to be used to protect the weak and vulnerable.

However, due to corrupt character, positions become the very tool to extort and take their lives.

While such darkness is heart-breaking, Christ has given us a very contrasting example. His Father is the Creator of the universe. All things are created through Jesus. If we are to talk about power, no one can ever be at par with what He can do. Yet, He did not see His 'highness' as something to cling to.

Instead, he gave up his divine privileges;

he took the humble position of a slave

and was born as a human being.

-Philippians 2:7

Christmas is not just a reminder of God's gift of salvation to humanity. Jesus' birth conveys a message of sheer humility and therefore, no abuse of power.

This is where Jesus was coming from when He told his disciples a profound statement in Luke 9:23-24.

“If any of you wants to be my follower, you must give up your own way, take up your cross daily, and follow me. If you try to hang on to your life, you will lose it. But if you give up your life for my sake, you will save it.

Those who profess themselves as Christians must follow the example of Christ: giving up rights and power instead of abusing it serving with whole hearts from a lowly place.

A Christian is to be amazed by humility and love instead of influence and power.

I truly believe that God intends for His children to succeed in the lives they live on earth to be an evidence of His capacity to bless. In doing so, He will entrust positions of power. It is crucial to remember that these are not to be used for personal gain but to bless others.

For policemen, politicians, and others who exploit, let's hold on to the promise of sorrow on those who do evil just because they can.
