A Man Like Daniel

Updated: Dec 5, 2020

Multiple times I have been asked if I want to be married. Of course! And then, there will be follow-up questions like: "When? Why are you still single? What are you looking for?"

While such questions do not really bug me, sometimes, they make me reflect about the kind of man I want to spend the rest of my life with.

Here are some characteristics of a man from Daniel 1-2 that women can base their 'ideal' types on.

Daniel is my kind of man, because he:

Was described as strong, healthy, good-looking (1:4). In the midst of an exile, fresh si koya. Cutie siguro ito na medyo buff. Of course, women should not look at just what the eyes meet. However, those three adjectives point to the fact that he takes care of himself. Hindi vain pero yung marunong mag-alaga ng sarili kaya hindi gusgusin. Awwww. Kyot.

Reads and therefore, well-versed (1:4). This is in the sense that he went through training in language and literature. It was never said he did not want to. He embraced the exile as an opportunity to learn. How many men are like him in a world that settles for mediocracy? Few.

Hold firm convictions (1:8). He was far away from home and being offered by a wine and much meat. He resorted to vegetables and water instead. Naks, healthy living. Beyond that, he stood up to what he believed in. He knew how to say "no". Hard pass on something seemingly good. Hindi 'to babaero. Marunong umayaw kahit nakakaakit eh. Nako, bihira na yung ganyan.

Lives a lifestyle of excellence (1:17, 20). He had special abilities of interpreting dreams and he is found capable more than any other magician. If we were born in the same era, I'd probably admire such skill. Hindi tambay na walang magawa. Hindi 'to sad boi. Hindi rin school-bukol na laging nasa row 4.

Handles situations with wisdom and discretion (2:14). The king had a dream and all the scholars and magicians' lives are at risk if they could not tell what the dream was. Hindi siya nag-panic. Nagtanong-tanong siya kung anong nangyayari. Chill. Calm. Relaxed.

Prays in response to difficulties (2:18). Together with his godly friends, they urged God to tell them what the dream of the king was. They did not bail time. He prayed right away. Ito ung tipo ng lalaki na walang anger issues at hindi parang may monthly period din kasi marunong mag-pray.

Acknowledges God instead of taking pride on the victory (2:19, 23,30). The moment the prayer was answered, he praised God. When in front of the king, He did not claim the wisdom as His own that it was from God. He also made the king see that the dream was for the purpose of revealing what His heart had inside. There wasn't a inch of proud behavior in Daniel even when he had every right to be. Samantalang napakaraming lalaki sa paligid na ubod ng hambog kahit wala naman ipagmamalaki. Lord, isang Daniel naman po dyan please. HEHEHE.

Gets promoted through God's hand (2:49). As a consolidation of his wisdom, discretion, prayer, and humility, God is pleased with Daniel. When God is pleased, success follows. Daniel did not have intentions of climbing the kingdom's ladder to the top. He was merely obedient to God. Never did he complain being in exile. Mapapa-sana all ka nalang talaga.

In summary, here are things to look for an 'ideal' man:

  1. Self-love

  2. Life-long learning

  3. Strong convictions

  4. Excellence

  5. Wisdom

  6. Emotional Intelligence

  7. Humble

  8. Obedient to God

Nawa, ang mga babae sa henerasyon natin ay magkaroon ng matinding paniniwala na kung hindi lang din ganyan ang lalaki, wag nalang.

Ika nga ni Madam Mav Gonzeles, "okay lang wala, kaysa mali."
